Let's Start With Articles!

Okay everyone..Lets have the first grammar lesson..Before I proceed with the 8 parts of speech, lets have a look at Articles. Some of us might confuse with the usage of Articles. So here are some descriptions and examples on how you can use Articles correctly..

In order to use Articles correctly, you need to be aware with the rules:

1)  We use 'a' with singular nouns which begin with consonant sounds.
      (Consonant: b,c,d,f,g,h,j,k,l,m,n,p,q,r,s,t,v,w,x,y,z)
For examples:  a book,  a horse,  a man,  a uniform

2)  We use 'an' with singular nouns which begin with vowel sounds.
     (Vowels: a,e,i,o,u)
For examples: an aeroplane, an exercise, an hour (sounds like -our), an x-ray (sounds like ex-ray)

3)  We use 'a' or 'an' when we speak of someone or something for the first time.
For examples: An artist works with brushes and paints./ A monkey came into my house.

4)  We use 'the' for a particular object.
For example: This is the book I was telling you about.

5)  We use 'the' when we speak about something for second time.
For example: I bought a book this morning. I am reading the book now.

6)  We use 'the' when there is only one such thing.
For example: The earth goes round the sun.

7)  We usually use 'the' before ordinal numbers and with superlatives.
For examples: 1) I live on the third floor. 2) He is the worst singer.

But remember!
  • The words 'a', 'an', and 'the' are called articles.
  • A noun is the name of person, an animal, a plant, a place or a thing. (Examples: boy, tiger, tree, village, chair)
  • Words beginning with consonant letters do not always begin with consonant sounds. In the same way, words starting with vowel letters may not begin with vowel sounds. (Example: 1) an honour - sounds like -onour. 2) a Eurasian - sounds like yurasian
  • An ordinal number is a number like first, second, third or fourth which shows the position of something in a list of items.
